The Pie Tin, Newtown

Ever since I had what was most possibly the best pies ever from Fergbaker in Queenstown, I thought I was doomed to ever find a product of similar quality within Sydney. That was until my friends introduced me to The Pie Tin, a small pie shop tucked away just off the main thoroughfare of Newtown, King Street.

The Pie Tin has a large range of sweet and savoury pies made fresh everyday which are all on display behind glass windows. Some of the quirky flavours that you can find here behind their sweet display include Snickers, ‘Apple Pie that ate Newtown’, Oreo Cookie and American Style Sweet Pumpkin Pie. For the savoury, they have a great selection of fusion flavours covering lamb, beef, chicken and vegetarian, and even feature home cooking style flavours such as slow roasted pork and Sunday roast. Today I am dining in and decide to try a few within our party of three.

Butter Chicken with Green Beans – $6.80

We kick start our pie adventures with the Butter Chicken pie. This contains tender chicken and string beans enveloped in a creamy Indian butter sauce. It is very delicious and goes well with the flaky golden pastry which acts as a makeshift roti that absorbs all the curry sauce.

Bangers and Mash Pie with Onion Gravy – $5.80

Next is the Bangers and Mash pie is a fun play on a classic pub dish. This pie contains small sliced up bits of sausages, along with caramelised onions. It is a classic tasting pie with different fillings and also goes well with the soft creamy mash on top.

Mexican Chicken with Red Kidney Beans and Sour Onions + Chips (combo) – $12

Another pie which catches our eye is the Mexican inspired one. This one contains caramelised onions, beans, tender chicken pieces and even has sour cream towards the middle! The gravy in this particular pie is also spicy, adding in that extra kick, and as my friend describes it is like “Max Mex in a pie”.

The “Sunday Roast” Pie – $6.80

The last savoury pie we get is the “Sunday Roast” which contains slow roasted lamb, baked spuds, pumpkin, peas and mint gravy. The lamb is tender and plentiful, but I find that there is little sauce or gravy inside (perhaps all sucked up by the lamb???). It is my least favourite out of the three savoury pies but is still of good quality and probably would be a winner for those who like really meaty pies.

Classic Banoffee Pie – $8.50

After this, we treat ourselves to the sweet Banoffee pie. This consists of a very light cream filling with fresh banana, walnuts, toffee and chocolate flakes all sitting on a chocolate biscuity base. It is a great way to cap off the meal and is surprisingly very light thanks to the cream; it is nowhere near as heavy tasting as Jazz City Diner’s but I think I still prefer Jazz City Diner’s as they are more generous with the banana.

Overall, I am blown away by the selection and quality of pies at The Pie Tin. These are definitely the best pies I have ever eaten in Australia, and all at an affordable price! There is such a large selection of pies I wanted to try but just couldn’t fit in the one sitting, so I know I’ll definitely be back to sample more of the menu. If you’re ever in the area, I would highly recommend grabbing a bite to eat here because otherwise you’re definitely missing out on this hidden gem.
